Recently, we stumbled upon a touching story about the story of two visually impaired women Miki and her husband Domenico from Como, Italy - 3D printer supplier 3DP srl made a photo with Domenico when he was 40 years old. The baby face 3D print model allows Miki to see how her husband was when he was a child.
We've seen a variety of examples of using 3D printing to improve the lives of blind and visually impaired people, such as: 3D printed tactile maps, 3D printed blind phones, 3D printed blind wearables, 3D printed Braille readers, 3D printing The blind cubes...etc. Through 3D printing technology, we can make the life of the blind or visually impaired more rich.
Domenico and Miki are a couple from Como, Italy, who have always lived a normal life, because Miki is no different from normal people in other respects, except for things that are invisible because of visual impairment. For example, Miki wants to look at Domenico's face, which is a luxury, but she can clearly feel him, but I don't know that he looks like a child.
Domenico said that Miki was very curious about what I looked like. She always said to me "I am sorry, now I can see your face, but I can't see your childhood photos." Domenico explained.
Domenico is very sympathetic to Miki's confusion. He knows a little about the local 3D printer supplier 3DP srl and wants to know if he can use 3D printing to create a model of his young face. “We got a call from Domenico and he said that I wanted to use my 40-year-old photo to create a 3D model of the face when I was young,†said Alberto Canali, co-founder and general manager of 3DP srl.
Canali was helped by digital artist and sculptor Simone Rasetti. Rasetti used the popular ZBrush software to build Domenico's photos into Domenico's 5 month baby face 3D model and printed the 3D print model using a Zortrax 3D printer.
Miki was very happy when she got this 3D printed model, because now she finally "sees" what Domenico looked like when she was a child. "When I miss him, I can touch this model, just like I am looking at his photos." She said, "Although I can't see him, I can touch this 3D model."
Asanka Withanaarachchi, founder and research manager of Canali's colleague 3DP srl, believes that this way can improve the lives of blind and visually impaired people: "You can talk about a tree or talk about a car, but [blind] I don't know what it means," he said. "So, I think the 3D printing industry will change the way blind people see the world in the near future."
