Just a little more than a year ago, Motorola, located in Illinois, United States, issued a message saying that the packaging method adopted by their upcoming new mobile phone accessories will put its competitors in a passive state. The four new products belong to the Motorola Original(TM) mobile phone accessory product line. The company seeks a packaging solution that supports the mainstream of the product in order to introduce these new products to the market, while also providing maximum visibility into the products within the package.

New packaging debut

AGI/Klearfold has developed a new, patent-pending InSight Slider(TM) package that meets Motorola's "innovation" and "catering to high-level consumers" requirements for packaging. The design incorporates a printed, patterned plastic wrapper and a folded, vacuum formed tray to create a distinctive, visually appealing package. In addition to its aesthetically pleasing appearance, this InSight Slider package offers superior product protection while making the loading of the product easier and less expensive.

According to Keith O`Connell, a senior packaging engineer at Motorola, "The mobile phone accessories market is flooded with low-cost spare parts suppliers and 'extremely competitive.' Motorola has produced high-quality, high-priced products, and, We believe that packaging should reflect the brand and product image."

For its new line of wireless phone chargers, the company wanted packaging that would allow its customers to see the accessories inside. At the same time, they are also looking for a form of packaging that will differentiate their products from the cheap products that are on the market. These cheap products are generally packaged in a common clamshell or blistering package with printed sheets of paper to identify the product.

New packaging design features

AGI/Klearfold's InSight Slider package is unique and eye-catching, providing a truly unique visual experience. Its main part is a printed plastic sleeve that can be made into a variety of shapes - including round, oval, rectangular or square. Motorola chose a cat-eye or pillow-like packaging for the Original line of accessories. To fit the non-linear shape of the package to secure the product in position, the other component is a folded, vacuum-formed tray that slides into the plastic sleeve and is locked by a tab on the sleeve.

The Motorola's product package includes a 12-inch-thick PVC cover that holds a 25-inch-thick, vacuum-formed PVC tray. In order to achieve an excellent graphics performance, AGI/Klearfold uses flexo technology on the front and back panels of the cover - in addition to a transparent circular window in front and a small one behind it for easy viewing of the product inside. Out of the window—10-color printing was performed using a pearlescent and metallic effect ink.

AGI/Klearfold adorned the sleeve at its Virginia production facility using an economical UV flexo printing press from Aquaflex. Aquaflex is a branch of the FL Smithe Machine Co. Group. AquaFlex's production facility is a web flexographic press that has been modified to incorporate two rotary screen printers. Motorola's packaging is printed in nine colors using flexo printing and screen-printed in one color—all in one go. In order to achieve bold and silvery effects on the front and back of the sleeve without using hot stamping, AGI/Klearfold uses a silvery metal-like flexo ink. This high-quality UV flexo process uses a pearlescent and metallic effect ink to enhance the value of the package. According to Mr. Pat McGee, AGI/Klearfold's marketing manager, there are no other hard plastic board conversion operations in the world that can achieve such high quality flexo and screen printing results in just one click.

In order to maximize the flexibility of sales in most retail markets, this package is designed to stand upright on a store shelf, or it can be used as part of a tray to hang the package with flaps.

According to Mr. McGee, one of the biggest challenges in the application of pallets for the packaging of Motorola products is to meet the company's need to design two vacuum forming trays that can accommodate four different cell phone accessories. “Each half of these two trays are designed to hold a product,” he explained. “The product was inserted into the tray and the tray was slid into the sleeve while keeping the product facing forward. Since the product must be To be front facing, the locking mechanism of the two products in the sleeve must be designed on the left side, and the locking mechanism of the other two products must be designed on the right side.” He added: “The realization of this design goal, Only two pallets are required to pack four products, reducing Motorola's pallet inventory by 50%.”

This innovative InSight Slider design not only differentiates Motorola's products from other products, but also provides the product's advantages in protection performance. Vacuum formed trays are injection molded to conform to the shape of the attachment, hold the product firmly, and protect the product from wear during the release process.
The locking performance of the packaging sleeve plays an important role in the protection of the product, it also reduces the possibility of the product being damaged and stolen in the store, and ensures that the source label is stuck inside the cover during the packaging process, and Hidden behind the printed graphics—and phone accessories, and packaging.

Although the easy opening feature of the package is often sacrificed to ensure the safety of the product, this is not the case for this Motorola Slider package. This zipper sleeve has a zippered opening on the back panel that allows the user to easily open the package after purchasing the product.

New packaging simplifies the filling process

In designing the packaging for its new Original line of accessories, another important Motorola standard is to develop a package that can be effectively filled by hand and does not require additional investment in filling, forming and capping equipment. O`Connell explained: “The current packaging used in the Original product line is a standard clamshell package with a paper insert card. Its main drawback is the need for a completely mechanical closure. This packaging process requires special tools. , increased packaging costs and extended the time for the products to be put on the market."

This InSight Slider package satisfies Motorola's requirements because it enables simple and effective manual assembly, and its locking mechanism does not require the use of costly sealing devices.

The design of this InSight Slider package allows it to be effectively hand-filled. Its outer packaging is flat-laid to Motorola, and the trays are delivered in nested form. The operator simply loads the mobile phone accessories into a vacuum-molded tray, folds the tray, and slides the entire assembly into the sleeve. As the loaded product tray gradually approaches its position in the packaging sleeve, the protruding tabs on the packaging sleeve are always in the slot of the tray, holding the product loaded tray in position. All these operations take only a few seconds, and the locked trays provide the required product safety protection without the use of matching sealing devices.

In discussing the relative costs of InSight Slider packaging and other alternative clamshell packaging, O`Connell explained that savings in packaging costs are achieved through packaging assembly. “The cost of materials is about the same,” he said. “But we can achieve cost savings at the end of the conversion process for the new package because it requires fewer parts and does not require sealing equipment. This packaging line has a faster processing speed.” Far more, we have reduced the number of operators on the production line."
