In 1991, an international conference on discussing hypoxia was held in Lake Louise, Alberta, Canada. The diagnostic criteria for acute mountain sickness, high-altitude brain edema, and high-altitude pulmonary edema were called "The Lake Louise Consensus". They are as follows:

Acute mountain sickness

High altitude brain edema

High altitude pulmonary edema

Newly climbed above sea level, there must be a headache plus at least one of the following symptoms:
- Gastrointestinal discomfort (a loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting)
- Tired/weak
- Dizziness/dizziness
- difficulty falling asleep

(High altitude brain edema is the final state of severe AMS.) Climbs at recent altitudes, with either of the following conditions:
1. With AMS symptoms, at the same time, gait instability or altered consciousness; or 2. Unsteady gait and altered consciousness, with or without AMS symptoms.

Climb at recent altitudes with the following phenomena:
Symptoms - There are at least two of the following:
- Respiratory discomfort during rest
-cough
- Weakness or loss of working ability
- Chest tightness or bloat symptoms - There are at least two of the following:
- At least one lung field has a vocal or wheezing sound
- Central hairpin
- Breathing
- Tachycardia
