As a child who grew up in a polluted slum in Jakarta, Vera Mulyani loved to build things from an early age, and her childhood dream was to become an architect.
Today, more than two decades later, Mulyani became a self-styled "Marschitect" and has been thinking about how to maintain a normal human life on this red planet. After studying at the école d'Architecture in Nantes, France, and at the New York Film Academy, she founded Mars City Design in January 2015, a think tank designed to develop the first self-sustaining urban blueprint on Mars. .
Earlier this month, Mars City Design raised $30,382 on the crowdfunding platform Kickstarter for the next phase: in the next three years, her team wanted to be in the test area of the Reaction Research Society in the Mojave Desert. 3D prints three scaled-down prototypes of Mars city habitats.
The design process for the project will begin at a seminar held at the University of Southern California in September. There, selected engineers, designers and architects from around the world will work together to innovate around the important aspects of the first city on Mars. Mulyani said that their purpose was to build a base of four people, which could eventually grow into a city of 1,000 people on Mars. Unlike most similar projects, she explained that their project will “from macro to microâ€, first exploring how the entire city will operate and then returning to a single habitat.
Speakers at the seminar will include Jim Erickson, NASA's Mars Rover project manager, and Madhu Thangavelu, professor at the University of Southern California's Viterbi School of Engineering, while Apollo 11 pilot Buzz Aldrin will also participate in the workshop. Mulyani also said that Aldrin is very concerned about the project and even encourages his friends to participate in crowdfunding activities on Kickstarter.
Earlier this year, a team of 25 finalists selected by the Space Experts Group, Mars City Design will pick out 3 best prototypes for 3D printing. These designs include:
NeuroSynthesis: an urban Habitat plan with enclosed water systems, mobile homes and artificial Mars Falls (top);
Project Dandelion: an autonomous habitat that uses weathered layers in Martian soil to provide sustainable sources of oxygen, water, energy and nutrients;
Vertical Farms: Enable food sources to grow in a controlled and sustainable environment in a narrow strip of Mars to reduce dependence on Earth supplies
Instant Structure: Use laser blasting technology to quickly build buildings as an immediate solution to natural disasters or wars;
Mars Research Facility: A research colony that uses Martian materials and computer-assisted construction techniques to support human life;
However, it is understood that Mulyani is not the only entrepreneur to pay attention to this red planet. In fact, the legendary entrepreneur, aerospace company SpaceX CEO Elon Musk has publicly claimed to bring 1 million people to Mars in a century - he even proposed a detailed plan for Mars governance. Mulyani said she also got inspiration from Musk.
If all this seems a bit ambitious for a planet that hasn't yet landed on Mars, Mulyani says her team has seen it farther and is studying what happens after the first city, we have it. What happens after the first base."
“We can think about how to use every stage of the design process and incorporate a thorough waste management mechanism from the start.†She said: “Mars, let us have a chance to start again.â€
