According to a new study recently published in the scientific journal National Energy Materials, researchers at the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) are using Optomec's aerosol injection technology to make solar cells more cost-effectively. The method has a large potential for application.
Solar energy is a clean energy source, but current solar cell manufacturing is a complex, time consuming, labor intensive, and costly process. “If you want solar energy to be competitive, you have to make solar cells more efficient and cost-effective,†the researchers said. “Si-cells use pure inorganic materials, and the materials themselves are very hard. We need an easy to print, while still A material that captures sunlight."
Inspired by newsprint, one of the rolls of paper was printed with ink, and the researchers believe that if an inorganic-organic hybrid material can be printed, solar energy can be captured without being expensive.
It has been proven that thin film perovskite has excellent light absorption and powerful energy conversion efficiency. This material has appeared in the 1990s, but has been used to produce light-emitting diodes instead of capturing solar energy.
The researchers atomized the perovskite precursor material with ultrasound to deliver tiny aerosol droplets to the aerosol spray printer nozzle. With the help of the CAD tool path, the material can be coated with a suitable surface to create a solar cell with an efficiency of 15.4%.
The researchers conducted further research to print the material onto a 3D surface, and the resulting solar cell was able to maintain 5.4% efficiency.
The application is almost limitless. Using this material and printing process, one can print flexible solar cells on clothing. Self-powered robots, lighting devices, and even self-powered flexible sensors can suddenly be realized in the near future.
Researchers have filed patent applications for the technology and are currently awaiting approval.
