A few days ago, the Waste & Resources Action Programme (WRAP) in the UK analyzed the emissions of different packaging and transportation processes in the wine industry and developed new benchmark figures to save energy and reduce carbon dioxide emissions.
This study analyzed the "carbon footprint" of the wine imported from Australian Berri winery and Bordeaux, France (referring to the behavior of human beings through the emission of greenhouse gases and thus affecting the climate, using carbon dioxide as the calculation unit), advocating bulk or light use. Quality glass packaging, choose a reasonable mode of transport, thereby reducing the "carbon footprint" and save energy.
Studies have shown that if the bottled wine is changed to bulk wine packaging, and the use of water transport imports, the carbon dioxide emissions can be reduced by 30% -40%. If light glass packaging is used instead, 30% of the exhaust emissions can be reduced during transportation.
Andy Dawe, Manager of the Glass Products Technology Department of the British Waste and Resources Action Plan, said: “This report is very important, and importers can improve packaging and transportation methods and reduce carbon dioxide pollution. In the UK, we encourage the import of bulk wine and goods. Upon arrival, they will be repackaged and sold in environmentally friendly lightweight glass bottles,†Dawe added. “Imported bulk wine also indirectly saves transportation energy and costs.â€
Currently, Constellation Wine Group and Tesco, ASDA, SOMERFIELD and other large supermarkets have benefited from the above plans. The British Waste and Resource Action Plan Organization also advocates the use of lightweight glass bottle packaging in other food and beverage industries (including spirits, beer). Among them, Rockware Glass actively responded to the call for a commercial spirit bottle with a capacity of not less than 300 grams and a capacity of 70cl. Coors Brewers also used a 300ml bottle of Grolsch. Cuts 23%; Adnams Brewery sells Broadside, Explorer and Bitter wines in 500ml lightweight glass bottles.
