The process of the tungsten bromide cycle is this: under the appropriate temperature conditions, the tungsten evaporated from the filament reacts with the tungsten bromide in the area of ​​the bubble wall to form a volatile tungsten bromide compound. Because the bubble wall temperature is high enough (250oC), the bromine compound is in a gaseous state, and when the bromine-tungsten compound diffuses into the area around the hotter filament, it differentiates into bromine and tungsten. Part of the released tungsten returns to the filament, while bromine continues to participate in the cycle.

The hydrogen bromide in the tungsten bromide lamp can perform the normal tungsten bromide cycle at the temperature of the glass bulb wall of 200 to 1100 ° C, so it can be used to make high-power high-efficiency electric light sources. The effect of bromine on cleaning the wall of the glass bulb is better than that of iodine, and the problem of blackening of the glass bulb is basically solved. Hydrogen bromide is a colorless and transparent gas that does not absorb visible light and has a higher luminous efficiency than tungsten iodine lamps. The gas convection in the bromine tungsten lamp does not affect the life of the lamp, and it must not be placed horizontally like the tungsten iodine lamp in use. In many positions, the bromine tungsten lamp has replaced the iodine tungsten lamp. The shape of the luminous body of the bromine tungsten lamp is diverse. It has a point shape, a linear shape, and a planar point shape. The working temperature and luminous efficiency are high. It is widely used in optical instruments, film projection, lithography, etc.

The color temperature of the bromine tungsten lamp is about 3000K-3200K, and the spectral radiance is: L (λ) = ε (λ) B (λ); where, B (λ) is the spectral radiance of the black body at the same color temperature as the bromine tungsten lamp. Ε (λ) is the spectral emissivity of tungsten that varies with wavelength and temperature, and is about 0.2-0.5.
