Ogle Models & Prototypes is a world-class prototype design company headquartered in the United Kingdom. It has been invited to help complete many 3D printing projects, such as the production of parts for British Telecom mobile phone models and remote-controlled AutoNaut drones. Recently, the company has been invited to help build autonomous robot vehicles that will be used to determine whether it is possible to live on Mars.
Since its establishment in 1954, Ogle has been continuously developing and continues to invest in new processes and technologies, such as 3D printing. This is one of the first British models in the past 20 years to become a company investing in SLA 3D printers and one of the first companies to use SLS technology. Now, Ogle's model manufacturers have been required to apply their expertise and precision to prototype production. In particular, they will manufacture bodywork and solar panels for the Mars Lander rover chassis, which will be used for terrain processing on the Red Planet and also for testing under laboratory conditions.
The Mars rover will be launched during the second phase of the European Space Agency ’s (ESA) ExoMars mission. “By drilling directly below the surface, it will directly detect organisms and track research on the possibility of exploring Martian life.†Bus defense and space are the second largest space operations in the world. It approached Ogle for help creating a test vehicle that could be driven in two ways: through remote control and autonomously, with the body and solar panels installed in place.
Ogle used Cellite panels made of fiber-reinforced aluminum composite materials to keep the weight of the body and solar panels low, and used traditional CNC machine tools to manufacture 15mm MDF fixtures and cut out the Cellite panels from these fixtures using a bench milling cutter. Fill any exposed edges on the board with automotive filler, and then sand the edges to form a seal. Ogle's model manufacturer is able to glue threaded metal inserts to ensure that the fixing and bolts will remain safe while still being able to move.
