"Korix" is a minimalist VR real-time strategy game, and developers claim it is the first PSVR content that can run natively at 120Hz.
Although the PSVR display supports a 120Hz refresh rate, most games on the platform run at 60Hz and use a technique called asynchronous secondary projection to insert frames to achieve an output rate of 120Hz. The head display can also run a 90Hz refresh rate natively (matching Oculus Rift and HTC Vive).
Developer Mark Taylor said that "Korix" is the first PSVR game that can run natively at 120Hz, supporting PS4 and PS4 Pro. The developer said that the work is "the intersection of retro-style real-time strategy games and tower defense game elements." According to Yingwei.com, the developer will soon announce the specific launch date and support the PlayStation Move controller (not required).
To achieve such a high frame rate, especially on PS4 hardware that was launched in 2013, the game needs to be carefully optimized. There is no doubt that Korix's sharp and minimalist visuals are helpful in this regard.
90Hz is good, but the researchers say that a frame rate of up to 240Hz can improve VR immersion. I have experienced a demo of 120Hz on PSVR, and I am extremely impressed by its realistic level.
Although "Korix" is designed to run natively at 120Hz, Taylor said that when rendering complex scenes, secondary projection techniques can be applied if needed. Of course, this is less likely to occur in the more powerful PS4 Pro.
According to NX Gamer's technology preview video, Korix also uses super-sampling and 4x MSAA.
"Korix" was first released in August 2016, ahead of the PSVR's October time to market, but the game has not yet finalized the final release time. Taylor said it is expected to be announced in the next few weeks.
